The vows, the first dance, and the many toasts are preceded with the last highlight, the cutting of the cake. The custom of the newly wed cutting the cake together and feeding it to one another is a representation of new beginnings and the ways in which they will provide for one another.
There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing your cake. There are lemon, coconut, praline, carrot, chocolate fudge, spice cake and many more! There are also many options when it comes down to choosing the shape of your cake. The only real limit is your imagination and your budget. There are many talented bakers who can make just about anything! Gilded leaves, pleated silk, whorled seashells, grosgrain ribbon, and so on forth.

- Contact your baker at least three to six months in advance and interview your top choices. Ask to see their portfolio.
- Once you have a chosen a baker, fill out the contract. Make sure the contract has all the required information such as; the price (tell them your budget), method of delivery, and replacement in case of a mishap.
- If you want to save some money on the cake, use fresh flowers rather than gum-paste ones.
- A baker will work closely with you to create a cake that reflects the style of your event. They can take the inspiration from your décor, or your dress.
- You can choose different flavors for each layer (which is more costly) When you are choosing the flavor consider the weather and time of your wedding. Summer wedding….
- You can use different types of icing for your cake, most cakes are iced with either
(i) Fondant- a paste of sugar, water, and corn syrup tends to have a satiny, almost shell-like finish which is best for cakes with ornate decorations
(ii) Marzipan- a mixture of almond paste and sugar, also holds up very well and it is made from egg whites, butter and sugar.
(iii) Butter cream frosting- is light and fluffy and takes color and flavor well. This tends to melt in hot humid conditions.
